The Saint Joseph Saints got back on the winning track with a 7-1 Lakewood League victory over the Becker Bandits on Saturday afternoon at the Becker Athletic Complex. The Saints had lost three of their last four games and only had 10 players for Saturday's game, but pounded out 13 hits and got a solid pitching performance from Jason Ellingson to secure the victory. Offensively, Brent Schloe was 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs to lead the way for the Saints. Steve Newman went 3-for-5 with an RBI; Luke Schumer was 2-for-3 with a run scored and and an RBI; and Ryan Stark was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Ellingson pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run on five hits, one walk, and one strikeout. Craig Hern came on to retire the final six batters in order in his first pitching performance of the year.
In the top of the first, Stark singled and Schloe followed with a long home run to right field, his first of the season and the team's second, to make the score 2-0. The score stayed that way until the top of the fifth when Dan Scholand singled, Stark singled, both moved up a base on a wild pitch, and Scholand scored on Schumer's groundout. Stark moved to third on the groundout and later scored on a wild pitch to put the Saints up 4-0. Becker scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth, but the Saints came right back in the top of the seventh when Schloe connected for his second home run of the game to right center. Schumer followed with a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a groundout, and then scored on Steve Newman's single to right. The Saints added one more in the top of the eight with a little small ball as Eli Stenman walked, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Stark to make the score 7-1.
