Game Summary

The Saint Joseph Saints defeated the Litchfield Blues 8-0 in Lakewood League action Sunday afternoon at rainy Optimist Park in Litchfield.  Despite a light rain for most of the game, the Saints pounded out 12 hits in the game and their stellar pitching and defense held the Blues to just two hits.  Offensively, Charlie Carr led the way, going 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to open the game up.  Tom Kemper, Jason Wald, and Brent Schloe all had two hits in the game as well and both Schloe and Andy Schneider scored two runs.  On the mound, Jason Ellingson started and went five strong innings, allowing just one hit, two walks, and striking out three in earning his second victory of the season.  Chad Schwegel pitched the final four innings, allowing just one hit as well, two walks, and striking out seven to earn his first save of the season.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Schneider walked and scored on Wald's double to deep left center.  An infield hit by Steve Newman and a base hit to right by Kemper scored Wald from third to put Saints up 2-0.  The score remained that way until the top of the seventh when Casey Haugen walked and Carr followed with a towering home run to right.  After the Blues brought in a new pitcher, Luke Schumer doubled off the wall in right center and Schloe followed with a double into the right field corner.  A mishandled ball on the relay allowed Schumer to score on the play.  A groundout moved Schloe to third and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Newman to make the score 6-0.  In the ninth, Schloe led off with a single, moved to second on an error off the bat of Schneider, then moved to third when Newman was hit by a pitch, and scored when Nick Percuoco's groundball was mishandled.  Schneider scored the final run of the game when Dan Scholand beat out a double play, which gave the Saints an 8-0 lead.
