The Saint Joseph Saints won their third straight game on Wednesday night as they defeated the Sartell Muskies 8-3 in Lakewood League action at Champion Field in Sartell. The Saints had just seven hits in the game, but were able to capitalize on several Muskie errors. Craig Hern led offense by going 3-for-5 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Luke Schumer finished 2-for-5 with a run scored and Brent Schloe hit a 3-run home run to aid in the victory. On the mound, Chad Schwegel picked up the complete game win, allowing three runs on three hits, two walks, and 12 strikeouts to improve to 4-0 on the summer.
The Saints scored first in the top of the second inning after Schumer singled, went to second on a fielder's choice and throwing error, moved to third on another fielder's choice, and then scored on another throwing error on that same play to make the score 1-0. In the top of the third, Casey Haugen singled, stole second, moved to third on an error off the bat of Ryan Stark that also allowed Stark to reach second, and both scored on Schloe's 3-run home run to right center, his third of the season, to put Saints up 4-0. The Muskies responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth with a 3-run home run of their own to cut the lead to 4-3, but the Saints picked up two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to put the game out of reach. In the eighth, Hern singled, Schumer Singled, Carr sacrificed both runners up a base, and both scored on an error off the bat of Steve Newman. In the ninth, Tom Kemper reached on an error with two outs and Hern followed that up with a 2-run home run to left center, his second of the season.
