The Saint Joseph Saints' won their season opening game with an impressive 11-4 victory over the Sauk Centre Titans in Lakewood League action Sunday afternoon at sunny and windy Schneider Field. The Saints collected 15 hits on the day and played solid defense in the victory. Ryan Stark led the Saints at the plate on the day, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Dan Scholand, Charlie Carr, and Craig Hern were all 2-for-5 and Luke Schumer finished 2-for-4. Hern and Schumer finished with two RBIs each and Hern and Brent Schloe scored two runs. Jason Ellingson pitched six solid innings on the mound to pick up the win, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits, two walks, and two strikeouts in six innings of work. Jason Wald pitched the last three innings to pick up the save.
The Saints trailed 1-0 after two innings, but scored four times in the bottom of the third inning to take the lead. Eli Stenman walked, moved to second on Scholand's sacrifice bunt, went to third on Carr's single to shallow left, and scored the first run of the season on an errant throw as Carr was advancing to second on a wild pitch. Craig Hern followed with a triple to center to score Carr and Schumer's infield single plated Hern. Schloe reached on a fielder's choice, went to second on a walk to Stark, moved to third on a walk to Steve Newman, and scored on a wild pitch. The Saints would score four more times in the fifth inning after back-to-back singles by Schloe and Stark and a passed ball put runners on second and third. Newman reached on an error to score Schloe and move Stark to third. Stark then scored and Newman went to second on a wild pitch just before Eric Schreifels doubled to left to bring Newman home. A wild pitch moved Schreifels to third and he later scored when Scholand beat out an infield hit, making the score 8-1. The Titans answered with three runs of their own in the top of the sixth, but the Saints got one right back in the bottom of the inning when Schumer walked, went to second on a wild pitch, moved up to third on Schloe's groundout, and scored on Stark's infield single. St. Joe scored their final two runs in the seventh after Scholand doubled to shallow center, Hern doubled to left to score Scholand, and Schumer singled to center to score Hern.
