Game Summary

The Saint Joseph Saints won their first 10-run rule game of the season on Wednesday night as they defeated Sauk Rapids Jimmy's Hurricanes 18-5 in eight innings in Lakewood League action at windy Bob Cross Field in Sauk Rapids.  The Saints pounded out 17 hits in the game and had no errors on defense for just the second time this season.  The offense was led by Brent Schloe, who finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs and included his 500th career amateur hit, a bloop single in the eighth inning.  Charlie Carr went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and four RBIs; Dan Scholand was 2-for-4 with five runs scored; Luke Schumer was 2-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI; Steve Newman was 2-for-6 with a double and two runs scored; Craig Hern hit a two-run home run in the first and finished with three RBIs; and Jason Wald added a grand slam in the eighth to seal the victory.  Wald also picked up his first win of the season in his first start of the season on the mound.  He allowed two runs on five hits, four walks, and one strikeout in five innings of work.

The Saints struck early in the first inning after Scholand reached on an error, stole second, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch.  Schloe then singled and scored on Hern's first home run of the season to make the score 3-0.  The Saints added two more runs in the second after Aaron Rocheleau reached on an error, Scholand singled, Carr reached on a bunt single, Schloe singled home Rocheleau, and a wild pitch brought in Scholand.  Jimmy's got single runs in the second and third to pull within 5-2, but the Saints came back with four runs in the fifth to break the game open.  Tom Kemper reached first on a wild pitch strikeout, Newman reached on an error, Rocheleau sacrifice bunted both runners up, Scholand was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Carr walked to score Kemper, Schloe singled to score Newman and Scholand, Schumer singled, and Hern hit a sacrifice fly to score Carr.  The Saints scored three more times in the sixth after Andy Schneider singled, Newman doubled, Rocheleau hit a sacrifice fly to score Schneider, Scholand reached on an error, and Carr doubled to score Newman and Scholand, making the score 12-2.  Jimmy's scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to cut into the lead, but the Saints scored six runs in the top of the eighth to clinch the win.  Rocheleau led off with a single, Scholand walked, Carr singled to score Rocheleau, Schloe singled to load the bases, Schumer singled home Scholand, and then Wald connected for his first home run of the season, a grand slam to left field, that made the score 18-5.
