Game Summary

On Friday night, the Saints pounded out 12 hits against Winona and took advantage of four errors to hold on for their 13th straight victory.  Luke Schumer finished 3-for-4 with a double and two runs to lead the offense while Nate Swan, a draftee from the Sauk Rapids Cyclones, went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs.  Andy Schneider and Steve Newman both went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs and Brent Schloe was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI to aid the effort.  Chad Schwegel picked up the win on the mound with 6 1/3 effective innings of work to improve to 11-0 on the summer.  He allowed his first earned run in 31 innings in the bottom of the second, when Winona scored three times against him.  In the game, Schwegel allowed three runs on eight hits, three walks, and had three strikeouts.  Josh Vorpahl, a draftee from HR Pesty's Snappers, pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for his third save with the Saints.  He allowed two hits, one walk, and struck out five.

The Saints jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Swan singled, stole second, moved up to third on a groundout by Aaron Rocheleau, and scored on a groundout by Schloe.  The Chiefs came back with three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead, but the Saints quickly tied it in the bottom of the inning with two of their own.  Schneider and Newman singled, Dan Scholand walked to load the bases, and Swan followed with a 2-run single up the middle to score Schneider and Newman.  The Saints added another run in the fourth when Schloe singled, Schumer singled, Ryan Stark bunted the runners up a base, and Schloe scored on a groundout off the bat of Schneider.  In the fifth, Schumer doubled off the top of the fence in right and scored on an error off the bat of Jason Wald to make the score 5-3.  Vorpahl helped Schwegel out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the seventh to keep the score that way and the Saints responded with three runs to put the game away.  With two outs, Schloe singled, Schumer singled, Wald reached on an error to load the bases, Schneider singled to score Blake Cheeley, who ran for Schloe, and Newman followed with a 2-run single to score Schumer and Wald and end the scoring in the game at 8-3.
