Game Summary

The Saint Joseph Saints won another dramatic, come-from-behind, one-run game on Saturday afternoon by defeating the Orthopedic Ice 4-3 at Schneider Field.  The Saints trailed 3-0 in the eighth inning, but scored four times in the bottom of the frame with two outs to steal the win.  Dan Scholand provided the big hit, a 3-run double to right center to give the Saints their first and only lead of the day.  Scholand finished 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs to lead the Saints' nine hit attack.  Craig Hern and Brent Schloe each had two hits as well and Hern picked up the team's third straight victory on the mound in relief.  Blake Cheeley started and went 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits, two walks, and he struck out five.  Hern went the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing two hits, one walk, and he had two strikeouts.

The Saints fell behind 1-0 after an inning of play and the Ice added single runs in the third and seventh innings to take a commanding 3-0 lead.  However, the resilient Saints strung together a huge rally by scoring all four of their runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the lead.  With one out, Andy Schneider singled and pinch runner Bryan Rocheleau advanced to second on a groundout.  Luke Schumer and Jason Wald then walked to load the bases and Keith Plekkenpol was hit by a pitch to force home Rocheleau with the Saints' first run of the day.  After a pitching change, Scholand lined a shot to the right center gap, just out of the reach of the Ice right fielder, that scored Schumer, Eli Stenman, who was running for Wald, and Plekkenpol all the way from first to put the Saints up 4-3.  The Ice had two men on in the top of the ninth, but Hern induced a ground ball to end the game.
