The St. Joseph Saints withheld a late inning rally to hold on for a 6-5 exhibition victory over the Avon Lakers Wednesday night in Avon. With the Saints leading 6-1 in the eighth, the Lakers scored four times and had both the tying and winning runs on base before the last out. The game was then called after eight innings due to darkness. The Saints managed eight hits in the game, led by Brent Schloe, who finished 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Roy Wald contributed his first two hits as a Saint and also scored two runs, while Tom Kemper finished 2-for-4 with a run scored to aid the offense. Aaron Hellem earned the victory on the mound in relief and Luke Schumer picked up his first save of the season with three innings of work.
The Saints jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after an inning of play when Schloe lined a solo home run down the right field line. Avon tied the game with a run in the second, but the Saints regained the lead with a run in the third. Kemper singled, Michael Carr walked, and an error off the bat of Schloe scored Kemper for a 2-1 Saints lead. The score remained that way until the seventh, when the Saints struck again for two runs. Roy Wald led off with an infield single, Carr walked, Schloe singled to load the bases, Luke Schumer walked to force home Wald, and Aaron Rocheleau was hit by a pitch to score Carr. The Saints added two more runs in the eighth to take a 6-1 lead when Roy Wald singled, Dan Scholand walked, Carr reached on an error to load the bases, and Schloe singled home Wald and Scholand. The Lakers scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 6-5, but Luke Schumer got a pop out with the tying run on second to end the game.
