The St. Joseph Saints defeated the Pearl Lake Lakers 5-2 in Marty on Wednesday night in an exhibition game. The Saints pounded out 12 hits in the game, led by Steve Newman, who finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs. Brent Schloe also went 2-for-4 with a double and run scored, Luke Schumer went 2-for-5 with a double, run scored, and an RBI, and Tom Kemper was 2-for-2 while reaching base all five times he batted to aid in the win. On the mound, Aaron Hellem pitched seven strong innings to pick up the victory, allowing two runs on five hits, two walks, and striking out five. Jason Wald pitched the final two innings for his first save of the season.
The Lakers scored first with two runs in the bottom of the fourth for a 2-0 lead. The Saints responded with a run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead in half when Aaron Rocheleau singled, stole second, went to third on a single by Schloe, and scored on a fielder's choice by Schumer. St. Joe tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the sixth when Wald doubled, Kemper singled him to third, and scored on a single by Michael Carr. The Saints took the lead in the top of the seventh with two more runs after Schloe doubled, moved to third on a ground out, Newman singled Schloe home, and a walk, hit by pitch, and an error eventually plated Newman. St. Joe added an insurance run in the top of the eighth when Schumer double and scored on a single by Newman to make the score 5-2.
