After winning nine straight games, the St. Joseph Saints lost their second in a row as they fell 11-4 to a solid St. Stephen Steves team in exhibition action Wednesday night at Schneider Field. The Saints played arguably their worst game of the season as they committed seven errors, pitchers beaned five batters, and the offense managed just eight hits while leaving 15 men on base. Leading the offense was Luke Schumer, who finished with a home run and three RBIs. Brent Schloe went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI and both Matt Blackmore and Jake Althaus picked up their first career amateur hits in the losing effort. Aaron Hellem took the loss on the mound in relief.
The Saints got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning to take a quick 2-0 lead. Dan Scholand singled and eventually scored on Schumer's first home run of the season. The Steves tied the game with two runs in the third and then broke the game open with eight runs in the fifth to take a 10-2 lead. St. Joe chipped into the lead with two runs in the sixth when Michael Carr and Blackmore walked, both were sacrificed up a base, Aaron Rocheleau walked to load the bases, Schloe was hit by a pitch to force home Carr, and Schumer was hit by a pitch to force home Blackmore. The Saints left the bases loaded that inning and again in the seventh as they tried to rally, but failed to score again. The Steves tacked on an insurance run in the ninth to make the score 11-4.
