In a "Battle of the Saints," the St. Joseph Saints reached the .500 mark for the first time this season with a sloppy 12-8 victory over the St. Wendel Saints in an exhibition game Wednesday night at Schneider Field. The game ended after the eighth inning due to darkness. The Saints had just 10 hits in the game, committed four errors that lead to six unearned runs, and the pitchers combined for 10 walks. Leading the offense was Brent Schloe, who finished 3-for-5 with a double, run scored, and two RBIs. Steve Newman went 2-for-5 with a double, run scored, and an RBI; Dan Scholand and Luke Schumer both scored three runs; and Aaron Rocheleau hit the team's first home run of the season, a solo shot to left, to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. Schumer and Tom Kemper also finished with two RBIs and Schumer picked up the win on the mound with 3 1/3 near perfect innings of relief in which he allowed just one base runner and struck out four.
St. Wendel jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the first inning, but St. Joe stormed back with four in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-3 lead. Scholand and Michael Carr walked, Schloe singled to load the bases, Schumer reached on an error to plate Scholand, a wild pitch scored Carr, Rocheleau walked to reload the bases, and back-to-back fielder's choices by Newman and Aaron Hellem scored courtesy runner Roy Wald and then Schumer. St. Wendel tied the game in the top of the second only to have St. Joe take the lead right back in the bottom of the inning with three more runs. Scholand singled and went to second on an error, Carr singled Scholand to third, Scholand scored and Carr went to second on a passed ball, Schloe singled home Carr and went to second on an error, and Schumer singled home Schloe to put St. Joe ahead 7-4. However, the lead did not last long as St. Wendel scored three unearned runs in the third and another in the fourth to take the lead at 8-7. St. Joe would come back yet again, though, as they scored twice in the fourth to take the lead for good. Schumer walked, Rocheleau was hit by a pitch, Newman's fielder's choice moved Schumer to third, Newman stole second, and Kemper delivered a two-run single to score Schumer and Newman. St. Joe added a single run in the fifth when Scholand walked, moved to second on a ground out, and scored on a double by Schloe. In the sixth, St. Joe added another run on a solo home run by Rocheleau, and their final run came in the seventh after Schumer reached on a fielder's choice, Rocheleau singled, and Newman singled home Schumer to end the scoring at 12-8.
