On Saturday, the Saints only had nine players at the game, but managed to defeat the Walleyes with a 14-hit attack and solid pitching. The Saints scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull away after the Walleyes had closed to within one run. Five different Saints had two hits to lead the offense: Dan Scholand (two runs), Brent Schloe (two runs, RBI), Steve Newman (run), Aaron Hellem (run, RBI), and Tom Kemper (two runs). Michael Carr finished with two RBIs as well and Hellem picked up the complete game victory on the mound. He allowed four earned runs on seven hits, four walks, and he struck out 11 for his fourth win of the summer.
The Walleyes jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a half inning of play, but the Saints tied the game in the bottom of the first. Scholand reached on an infield single, Schloe singled him to third, and, on the throw to third, Schloe got caught in a rundown, which allowed Scholand to score. The Saints grabbed the lead with a run in the second when Newman singled, went to second on a ground out, and scored on an error after Hellem singled. Wheaton tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth only to have the Saints reclaim the lead in the bottom of the inning with two runs. Kemper and Chad Schwegel singled, Scholand walked to fill the bases, Kemper scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Carr, and Schwegel scored on a wild pitch. St. Joe then tacked on three runs in the sixth to take a 7-2 lead. Kemper singled, Schwegel sacrificed him over, Scholand singled and stole second, Carr executed a suicide bunt to score Kemper, Schloe singled home Scholand, and Luke Schumer doubled home Schloe. Wheaton added two runs each in the seventh and eighth innings to cut the lead to 7-6, but the Saints answered with three runs in the bottom of the eighth to add to the lead. Schloe walked and stole second, Luke Schumer walked, Schloe stole third and Schumer went to second on a wild pitch, Hellem reached on an infield single to score Schloe, Hellem stole second, Schumer scored on a wild pitch and Hellem went to third, Kemper walked, and Hellem scored on a double-steal attempt with Kemper being caught in a rundown, making the score 10-6.
