The Saint Joseph Saints snapped an 8-game losing streak with an 8-0 win over the Becker Bandits in Lakewood League action on Wednesday night at Schneider Field. The offense finally broke out a little with 12 hits in the game, led by Chad Hockemeyer and Luke Schumer, who each finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Hockemeyer and Jason Wald also scored two runs. Chad Schwegel picked up the win on the mound with six solid innings in which he allowed no runs on two hits, no walks, and struck out 11. Scott Sand earned the save after allowing no runs on two hits, one walk, and three strikeouts over the final three innings.
The Saints got on the board early for a change with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Hockemeyer singled and stole second, Luke Schumer walked, Aaron Rocheleau was hit by a pitch to fill the bases, and an error off Paul Schumer's bat scored Hockemeyer. The Saints struck again with two more runs in the second to build a 3-0 lead. Jason Wald doubled, Tom Kemper reached on a bunt single and then stole second, Aaron Hellem hit a sacrifice fly to score Wald, and Hockemeyer later singled to score Kemper. In the sixth, the Saints opened their lead by scoring three times. Wald walked, Jake Althaus sacrificed Wald to second, Hellem walked, Hockemeyer singled to score Wald, Brent Schloe singled to score Hellem, and Luke Schumer singled home Hockemeyer for a 6-0 Saints lead. St. Joe scored their last two runs in the eighth after Mike Dabu singled and went to second on an error, Chris Rocheleau singled home Dabu, and Luke Schumer doubled home Rocheleau to make the final score 8-0.
