The Saint Joseph Saints avoided elimination and advanced to the second round of the Lakewood League National Division playoffs with an 11-3 victory over the Clear Lake Lakers on Tuesday night at Joe Faber Field in Saint Cloud. An eight-run sixth inning helped blow the game open for the Saints to go along with solid defense and pitching. The Saints pounded out 10 hits in the game, led by Danny Scholand, who finished 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Michael Carr and Steve Newman each had two hits and an RBI; Carr, Paul Schumer, and Chad Hockemeyer all scored two runs each; and Brent Schloe and Aaron Rocheleau each drove in two runs. Aaron Hellem picked up the complete game win on the mound by allowing three runs on nine hits, one walk, and four strikeouts.
The game was scoreless and hitless for the Saints until the top of the fourth inning when St. Joe got on the board. Hockemeyer walked, Paul Schumer walked, both runners pulled off a double steal, Carr reached on an infield single to score Hockemeyer, Newman's suicide squeeze bunt resulted in a single to score Schumer, and Scholand singled home Carr for a 3-0 Saints lead. The Lakers responded with a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 3-1 and had the tying run on base, but Hellem was able to work out of the jam. In the sixth, the Saints' bats came alive as they scored eight times on six hits and were helped by four walks and a hit batsmen. With one out, Carr, Newman, and Scholand had consecutive singles to load the bases; Jason Wald walked to score Carr; Schloe singled home Newman and Scholand with Wald advancing to third and Schloe to second on the throw home; Luke Schumer walked to fill the bases again; Hockemeyer walked to force home Wald; Paul Schumer was hit by a pitch to score Schloe; Rocheleau singled to score Luke Schumer and Hockemeyer; Newman walked; and Scholand singled home Paul Schumer to give the Saints an 11-1 advantage. Clear Lake scored single runs in the sixth and ninth innings to finish the scoring at 11-3.
