The Saint Joseph Saints opened the 2009 season with a 4-1 Lakewood League loss to the Freeport Black Sox on Sunday afternoon at sunny and windy Black Sox Park in Freeport. The Saints were rusty in their first game of the season, committing three errors and collecting just four hits. Jason Wald had two hits and Aaron Hellem pitched four innings of scoreless relief to highlight the Saints. Scott Sand took the loss on the mound in his first start with his new team.
The Saints got on the board first with their lone run in the top of the third inning. Hellem singled, Michael Carr walked, Dan Scholand walked to load the bases, and Steve Newman hit a sacrifice fly to left to plate Hellem. Freeport tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third and then tacked on three more in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead that would hold up the rest of the game.
