The Saint Joseph Saints won their sixth game in a row by defeating the Randall Cubs 4-3 in the first round of pool play in the Saint Cloud Sports Inc. Tournament on Friday night at Joe Faber Field. The Saints managed seven hits in the game, led by Chad Hockemeyer, who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, Steve Newman, who doubled, scored a run, and had two RBIs, and Aaron Rocheleau, who had a double and two runs scored. Scott Sand pitched seven strong innings to pick up the win on the mound. He allowed three unearned runs on seven hits, one walk, and he struck out seven.
The Saints jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after just an inning of play. Danny Scholand tripled, Aaron Rocheleau walked, Paul Schumer grounded out to score Scholand and advance Rocheleau, Newman doubled to score Rocheleau, and Hockemeyer singled to score Newman. The Cubs score a run in fourth to cut the lead to 3-1, but the Saints got that run back in the bottom of the fifth when Rocheleau doubled, Brent Schloe singled, and Newman reached on a fielder's choice to score Rocheleau. Randall scored two runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 4-3, but Sand held them in check the rest of the way.
