After winning seven straight games, the Saint Joseph Saints lost their second in a row with a 4-2 loss to the Sauk Rapids Cyclones in a Lakewood League game Sunday afternoon at Schneider Field. The Saints outhit the Cyclones 13-12, but none of the hits were for extra bases and four double plays ruined several scoring opportunities. Leading the offense was Paul Schumer, who went 4-for-4. Luke Schumer went 3-for-4 and Brent Schloe and Jason Wald each had two hits. Scott Sand picked up the loss on the mound.
The Cyclones scored the first run of the game in the top of the fifth on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead. They added three more in the sixth on another wild pitch and a two out, two-run single to make the score 4-0. The Saints did not score until the bottom of the ninth inning when they scored twice. Steve Newman singled, Jason Wald singled, Paul Schumer singled and an error in the outfield allowed Newman to score and pinch runner Jake Althaus to go to third. A double play later scored Althaus to make the final score 4-2.
