The Saint Joseph Saints' seven game winning streak was snapped on Friday night with a 14-9 exhibition game loss to the Saint Stephen Steves in Saint Stephen. The Saints fell behind early and tried to mount a comeback, but fell short as the Steves outhit the Saints 20-10, including three home runs. Leading the Saints at the plate was Chad Hockemeyer, who finished 3-for-4 with a triple, run scored, and two RBIs. Aaron Rocheleau went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and a three-run home run, his first of the year, and Steve Newman and Danny Scholand each had two hits, a run scored, and an RBI. Luke Schumer took the loss on the mound.
Saint Stephen scored one run in the first, eight in the second, one in the third, and three in the fourth to take a commanding 13-0 lead after four innings of play. The Saints finally got on the board with a four-run fifth inning. Hockemeyer walked, Tom Kemper walked, Scholand singled to score Hockemeyer, and Rocheleau hit a home run to score Kemper and Scholand. St. Joe scored four more times in the seventh when Rocheleau singled, Brent Schloe singled Rocheleau to third, Luke Schumer's fielder's choice scored Rocheleau, Newman singled, Jason Wald reached on an error to score Schumer, and Hockemeyer tripled home Newman and Wald. The Saints scored another run in the eighth to cut the lead to 13-9 after Rocheleau walked, Schloe was hit by a pitch, Schumer's fielder's choice moved Rocheleau to third, and Newman singled home Rocheleau. The Steves added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to make the score 14-9 and finish the scoring for both teams.
