Saint Joseph Saints History

Amateur baseball has been alive and well in Saint Joseph since 1910, when the original baseball field was located in the southeast end of town.  Stories from these early years have been told of long home runs that rolled onto Main Street, where horse-driven wagons would dodge the chasing outfielder.  Today, the Saint Joseph baseball field is located in Memorial Park on land owned by the city of Saint Joseph.  This land was donated to the city over 70 years ago by the Loso family and designated to be used as park property forever.

As baseball continued to thrive during those early years, the powerful Great Soo League was formed in central Minnesota.  Saint Joseph had two teams in the league, the Joes and the Saints.  When the league dissolved in the 1960's, the Sauk Valley League was formed.  The Joes were one of the original teams in the Sauk Valley League along with Rice, Saint Wendel, Cold Spring, Albany, Dassel, Saint Cloud, Holdingford, Opole, Saint Stephen, Avon, Sartell and more.  In 2000, the Sauk Valley League folded and the Saint Joseph Saints joined the Lakewood League.

Through the efforts of many local service organizations, the city and the amateur baseball team have developed into a premier baseball presence in central Minnesota.  On June 16th, 2002, the baseball field was re-named Schneider Field in honor of the Don Schneider family for their many years of dedication to youth and amateur baseball in Saint Joseph.  In ceremonial fashion, the mayor and other city officials along with family, friends, and local citizens expressed their gratitude and thanks.
